Guild 2019 was held on May 14 & 15 at Graves Piano & Organ Company.  Guild is a closed session between student and adjudicator. The student is graded on their performance of a prepared program. The program sizes are Local (2-3 pieces), District (4-6), State (7-9) and National (10). The adjudicator takes into consideration their age and how long they have studied.

Our adjudicator this year was Dr. Vickie King.  Dr. King has degrees in piano from Mississippi University for Women and Indiana University. Her Doctor of Arts degree in Piano Pedagogy is from the University of Mississippi. She holds a Performer’s Certificate in Piano from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, and studied piano in Cologne, Germany with Pavel Gililov. She studied harpsichord in Hamburg, Germany with Gisela Gumz. She is the author of the book, Playing the Piano Naturally, and numerous articles published in Piano Guild Notes, in which she also reviews new music.

She lives in Bloomington, Indiana, where she works in the Jacobs School of Music as a ballet accompanist and is the accompanist for the Bloomington Chamber Singers. She is President of Friday Musicale, her Federated Music Club and her Sigma Alpha Iota alumnae chapter. She has given workshops all over the country to teachers on overcoming performance injuries. Her website is www.naturalpianoplaying.com. With her husband, tenor Dr. Thomas King, she is an active performer.

Dr. King taught piano students of all levels for over 40 years. Her students participated in Guild, MTNA, and Federation. Mrs. King has been a Guild judge for over 20 years. She enjoys judging children and seeing their enthusiasm and joy in playing their special pieces for her. She especially enjoys getting to know all the Guild teachers and exchanging ideas, and believes that Guild is a unique way for teachers and students to set goals for each year. She has judged in Columbus before and has firsthand knowledge of the work of the fine teachers there.
