Guild 2017 was held on May 15 & 16 in the Keyboard Room at Graves Piano & Organ Company.  Guild is a closed session between student and adjudicator. The student is graded on their performance of a prepared program. The program sizes are Local (2-3 pieces), District (4-6), State (7-9) and National (10).  The adjudicator takes into consideration their age and how long they have studied.

Our adjudicator this year was Claire Troyer. Claire started piano with her mother at age 3. She began piano study at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX at the age of 14. During her youth, she participated in the Guild thirteen times, received the Paderewski Medal, the Guild High School Diploma and the Guild Scholarship. In 1979, she received her Bachelors degree in Music Education with a piano concentration from the University of North Texas in Denton. She also received her Masters degree in piano pedagogy from Texas A&M at Commerce in 1982.

She has judged piano on many occasions for Guild and for other state and local contests in Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and Colorado. She has maintained piano classes of up to 56 and was a founding member and past president of the Greater Marshall and Jackson County Music Teachers Associations. While living in Marshall, Texas, she taught piano and music theory at East Texas Baptist University. She later taught piano at Victoria College in Victoria, Texas. She has also been involved as a church organist/pianist.

In 1997, she made the decision to go into public school music and became an elementary music teacher and assistant band director under her husband, Ed, in Sudan, Texas. During their 10 year stay, the Sudan band advanced to the bi-annual Texas UIL State Marching Contest four times, making the finals three times. They also made the finals of the bi-annual Texas Music Educators Association Honor Band Contest three times. She has accompanied many band students from numerous school districts in both regional and Texas State Solo-Ensemble contests. She also judged at Eastern New Mexico University’s band solo-ensemble contest several times.

Claire continues to do lengthy Guild judging tours because it keeps her involved in giving positive feedback to those who enjoy playing piano.
